Biography

Alfredo Carbajal is managing editor of Al Día and serves as senior editor at The Dallas Morning News’ news cabinet. He leads the Hispanic audience initiative, where he works with business areas directors on strategic journalism and audience growth initiatives.

Carbajal recently served as 2017-18 president of the American Society of News Editors (ASNE,) the third Hispanic ever to occupy that position. During his tenure, he led initiatives and campaigns to defend First Amendment news media issues and promote accountability journalism as a pillar for a democratic society. Carbajal led the merger between ASNE and the Associated Press Media Editors (APME,) resulting in the creation of the News Leaders Association (NLA,) a new organization grouping the nation’s top-level editors and news directors. A passionate promoter of leadership development and diversity in newsrooms, he created the ASNE Emerging Leaders Institute, which has provided foundational and strategic leadership skills to over 500 mid-level news editors and leaders since 2012.

Carbajal is one of the strongest advocates and most respected proponents of greater diversity in America’s newsrooms, pushing for a more accurate and fair coverage of minorities and underrepresented population segments. Aside from leading journalism projects for digital and print platforms, in English and Spanish, he has reported and edited news projects in both the U.S. and México.

Carbajal has a degree in Journalism from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP,) and was a 2009 fellow at the Punch Sulzberger Executive News Media Program at Columbia University.

In 2014, Texas-APME gave Carbajal the Jack Douglas award for his contributions to Texas journalism.
